Emmerdale bosses have discussed how efforts to make the show more environmentally friendly impacted the soap's 50th anniversary episodes.

As part of the milestone, a shock storm is set to wreak havoc for residents in the village.

Executive producer Jane Hudson has revealed that she was incredibly aware of how important it was keep the scenes as sustainable as possible, especially considering the soap is based in the heart of the British countryside.

She explained: "It’s really important to us as a show that we are green, we are sustainable, we’re very, very aware of the environment. When we shot this, there was only one large tree that we took down and that tree is being moved to the Harewood Estate and the wood is going to be used.

Hudson shared that much of the destruction and debris that viewers will see was actually made up mostly of trees that had already fallen or been cut down.

"To even that out we’re planting a lot of trees around the village – anything up to 50 trees are going to be planted around the village for sustainability," she said.

"When you watch the episode, you’ll see a lot of debris and a lot of fallen trees. They’re actually trees that had already fallen from either local farmers or the Harewood Estate. So they’re fallen trees that we took and used in our village set."

The executive producer went on to add that there was one part of the Emmerdale set that remained untouched by the storm scenes.

"What’s really key for us is that the one area you won’t see destroyed is our allotment, which is part of our soap crossover environment initiative," she said. "In that allotment, we grow produce which we donate to charities in the area to use in their kitchens or to hand out to families."

She added: "So we haven’t touched the allotment. The produce is still growing and going to be harvested, and in future episodes we’ll see the sheds have maybe been destroyed but it’s all mocked up. The produce is safe and well and flourishing despite the storm."

Meanwhile, ITV bosses recently confirmed that the upcoming storm chaos will coincide with the wedding of Kim Tate and Will Taylor.

Hudson shared previously: "Everyone's involved. It would be easier to say who is not involved. There is Will's wedding, so anyone connected to Kim and Will has a major part to play."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
