Emmerdale actor Danny Miller has said he initially felt nervous about returning to the soap after he left the long-running TV show last year.

Miller played Aaron Dingle in Emmerdale from 2008-2012 before leaving the show for two years. Then, he returned in 2014 and played the character until last year when he quit the show again. However, he returned to the soap when producers rang him asking him to be part of Emmerdale's 50th-anniversary episodes.

In a new interview with the Daily Mirror, Miller said of his return: “It was nerve-racking and quite anxiety-provoking."

“My wife Steph is absolutely amazing and she always calms me down, which is obviously the reason I married her. We always let each other know how we feel, so the day before I went back to Emmerdale, I said to her, 'I'm feeling really anxious.'"

He continued: “I’d thought of staying over in a hotel the night before but I wouldn’t have been able to sleep. I’d have been a nervous wreck because she wasn’t there. I’ve just had 12 months off, so my brain hasn’t really been exercised in that way for a whole year."

Miller said that he was worried about whether or not he'd able to slip back into the character of Danny again after leaving for a year. He was concerned he might not even sound the same. But when it came time to actually return to the Emmerdale set, all of those fears were eased.

“It felt like the first day back at school, I even made myself a little packed lunch like a nine-year-old boy and I left 45 minutes early, just to make sure I wasn’t late. I built myself up into a bit of a state and had a few butterflies. But I talked it through with Steph and we broke it down," Miller said.

“She made me realise it was almost like I was just going back to say hello and tie up a few things, and say happy 50th birthday to Emmerdale. I wasn’t going to be there for long, so I should just enjoy it."

Miller is returning to the soap for its 50th anniversary and will be part of an emotional storyline involving his grandmother Faith and his fight for Liv's forgiveness.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
