Emmerdale star Samantha Giles is hoping that Bernice Blackstock and Liam Cavanagh get some genuinely serious storylines in the future.
Both characters seemed to be on track for a sinister story of late when Bernice grew suspicious of Liam's unusual behaviour — but later discovered he was merely a murder mystery party enthusiast.
Looking ahead to the couple's future, Giles has told Digital Spy and other media that a genuinely dramatic storyline for the couple could actually work.
"I think it could work really well doing some serious storylines, with the ‘comedy characters’ having something difficult to deal with because it proves that things could happen to anybody," she said.
"But it is nice with us – the show wouldn’t work with absolutely everybody in it having a hard time or being miserable. They have to share it out – which is great for us."
Liam Cavanagh actor Jonny McPherson was also quizzed on whether he was disappointed over the comical resolution to his character's recent suspicious behaviour.

"I suppose the way stuff’s being written at the moment it’s light-hearted comedy – if he went down the psychotic route it would be exciting in a different way and of course I’d go with it – but I’m very happy with the way it’s currently going," he explained.
The couple recently split on-screen because of Bernice's suspicions, but she will plan to win Liam back in upcoming scenes with a romantic proposal.
Teasing the possibility of the couple getting married, Giles hinted: "I think Bernice would want an extravagant wedding, wouldn’t she? Dressing up and whatever."
Yet, the actress isn't quite sure if Bernice and Liam will go the distance after their recent rough patch.
"Who knows?" she teased. "I think there’s a lot of potential there – they seem quite well-suited. They both have little quirks."
McPherson seems more convinced about Liam's feelings for Bernice, confirming that "he does" definitely love her in spite of their blip.
"Clearly, it throws a spanner in the works when your partner thinks you could murder them," he joked.
"But especially after she goes through all that effort in throwing the party, it’s a very touching gesture – declaration of her love."
Emmerdale currently airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
