Reid tackled these head on this evening, sharing an image of late London gangster Ronnie Kray, who was openly gay.

"It's upsetting to read the negative tweets about the gay kiss in last night's episode of @bbceastenders," Reid wrote under the picture. "I only want to ask one question. Would you of called Ronnie Kray disgusting? #whatwouldronniesay"

He added: "Note: I'm not biting, it just needed pointing out;)"

Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins also commented on negative reactions, writing: "Very very sad. It's 2015, people."

Reid has teased the upcoming relationship drama, telling Digital Spy that Paul is "an outlet" for Ben's true feelings: "He can express what he really feels with Paul, rather than with Abi. I think it'll be interesting to see how Ben copes with having someone around who he really likes."

EastEnders continues Thursday at 8pm on BBC One.
