Sam Mitchell is set to leave her son Ricky devastated after returning to Walford in EastEnders.

A dramatic return storyline has been teased for Sam, including a first look set of images showing the character being thrown out of a van before being helped up by brother Phil Mitchell.

And, in scenes set to air next week on BBC One, she is set to upset her son Ricky after she returns to Walford with a bang from a lucrative job in Spain.

After returning, she begs Phil to help her, revealing that she owes a lot of money to a very dangerous drug kingpin; this, in turn, leaves Kat furious that Phil would consider helping her by bailing her out.

Sam later wakes up feeling sorry for herself at Billy's – and, crucially, still hasn't gone to see her son Ricky, and his newborn baby Charli.

She encounters her drug boss Camillo, who physically attacks her by grabbing her arm. The situation escalates after Kat urges Phil and Billy to assist Sam.

Faced with the possibility of Sam being hurt further, Phil promises Camillo that he will pay Sam's debts for her.

When Sam later visits Ricky and Charli, the former is furious that she has been home for so long without seeing the pair.

Sam, in the knowledge that brother Phil will be helping her pay off her debts, insists that she's ready to pay her son and grandchild the attention they deserve; Ricky, however, remains cold.

Sam asks Stacey to help convince Ricky she's telling the truth, and is thrilled to finally meet her grandchild. She asks Phil for a permanent place to stay.

EastEnders executive producer Chris Clenshaw recently hinted to Digital Spy that there's yet more Sam trouble on the horizon: "Sam will be making her way back to the Square this autumn, actually, and in typical Sam Mitchell fashion, she finds herself in a troublesome place and has to ask big brother Phil to help her out of a sticky situation.

"Lots has happened since she's been away – obviously she's got a grandchild, Charli, but Ricky Jr isn't happy that his mum has been so absent.

"I think the great thing about Sam is that she's very much a character that can kind of turn up at the Mitchells at any time, cause mayhem and leave them to sort out her mess every time. There's a lot of fun with Sam."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
