EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Shane Richie has given more details about his character Alfie Moon's upcoming Christmas storyline which will see him attempt to win back Kat Slater.

As fans will know, Alfie has been desperate to reconcile with his ex-wife Kat despite the fact that she is currently engaged to Phil Mitchell. Upcoming scenes will see the pair star opposite each other in the Walford panto, as a last-minute illness sees Kat play Snow White.

Speaking about the episode, Richie said the panto was "just another ploy for him to get back with Kat".

"His idea was to put on this panto, and he'd play Prince Charming, and she'd be Snow White. They'd have a big kiss at the end and bang, she'd fall in love with him again," he explained.

Richie added that Kat's late inclusion in the show leads to Alfie rewriting the entire story as he attempts once again to woo her.

He said: "Alfie rewrites the story just before they go on. All of a sudden, the Huntsman is basically Phil, and Alfie turns the whole story into the Kat and Alfie story. It's all about how they met, how Phil's got in the way, but they are going to have a happy ending."

Things however don't go entirely to plan for Alfie as Kat forbids the pair from sharing a kiss on stage – despite his attempts to push the matter. "He's like a dog with a bone – he will not let go," Richie added when asked about his character's persistence.

Speaking about the character's dynamic, Richie said that he was aware there is a whole generation of fans who wouldn't be aware of Kat and Alfie's story.

"What's interesting about Kat and Alfie is that there are millions of people who know their story, but there's also a new generation that doesn't know their history. They are watching it as a blank canvas. To them, this guy has turned up and is a bit stalker-ish and is persistently trying to get with Kat," he explained.

"But there are also millions of people who say, 'They've got to get back together!'"

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
