BBC soaps EastEnders and Casualty have both been nominated for the prestigious Rose d'Or award.

The global award – the nominees of which are selected by 100 international judges – recognises excellence in entertainment programming and broadcasting, and has been handed out since 1961.

Both TV shows have been nominated in the Soap or Telenovela category, with nods alongside shows from Portugal, Brazil, Canada and France.

A number of other big shows from the past year have also scored nods, including Netflix's Heartstopper, HBO's Succession, the BBC's This Is Going To Hurt and Dinosaurs: The Final Day with David Attenborough.

“In a record year, we’ve seen an unrivalled breadth of subjects and innovative creative approaches – with production standards higher than ever in all of the 30 countries whose broadcasters and producers entered shows," said Mark Rowland, chair of the judges.

Jean Philip De Tender, the deputy director general/director of media at the European Broadcasting Union, added: “These awards attract an exceptional level of talent and technical skills that make it so challenging to whittle down the entries to just six nominees in each category.

"It underlines for me that great content matters more than ever – telling a story and interpreting it with imagination and impact are the skills that really resonate with audiences.

"The creatives on our shortlist do this and more – each and every one has created something special and gives me real optimism that the future of programme making is in a very good place indeed."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer. Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
