Former EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite has opened up about why she’s glad over her character Mel Owen’s death.

In an interview with Inside Soap, the actress talked about her feelings towards Mel, who she first played in 1998.

“At first I was sad that Mel died,” she said. “And now I am pleased because it means the door is closed and it’s done.”

“Part of the excitement of being an actor is the uncertainty and not knowing what the next job is. I was very fond of the character. But to know you can’t go back is nice in a way,” she explained.

Tamzin was a part of the show from 1998 to 2002, before leaving and later returning once again in 2018, and then permanently exiting in 2019.

In the same interview, she spoke about her time on the soap and the people she loved working with.

“I have fond memories of both times on EastEnders. I loved working with Lucy Benjamin, Martin Kemp, Scott Maslen, Letitia Dean… we had such a wonderful time,” she said.

“I was learning my trade in front of millions. I’d done a lot of theatre but hitting your marks and knowing the technical side of filming, I learned there."

“So much is chucked at you, every day is a school day,” she added.

She also attributed her career on soap to the actress she has become today.

“If you can do a soap you can pretty much do anything,” she said.

“You’re learning lines, remembering continuity, having three or four scripts on the go at once, it’s such a buzz. It’s the same with musical theatre. There’s a lot going on and so much multitasking.”

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
