EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders' Kheerat Panesar will drop a bombshell about his dad Nish when he turns up in Walford.

Upcoming scenes will see Nish – who is the father of Kheerat, Vinny, Ash and Ravi – try to reconnect with his family, following a long stretch in prison.

Things are tense at the Panesars' as Kheerat struggles to remain civil with Nish in next week's episodes.

While Vinny is keen to support his dad, Nish is disappointed when Ash and Kheerat fail to show for a family lunch.

The reason for Kheerat's hostility becomes apparent when he opens up to Stacey about the past, explaining that Nish killed someone who got too close to Suki.

While Kheerat continues to keep his dad at arm's length, Nish tries to settle himself back into the family businesses. However, after a run of awkward incidents, he has a confrontation with Kheerat and later collapses on the floor.

As Ash treats him, Nish takes the opportunity to share some touching words with his daughter.

Kheerat, on the other hand, is still reeling from his run-in with Nish and his day gets even worse when he realises that Stacey knew about Suki and Eve's romance, and also about his father.

Feeling betrayed, Kheerat storms out and is further despondent to find Nish has managed to win Ash round.

This is the final straw for Kheerat, who makes the big decision to tell Vinny and Ash why their dad was really in prison.

Afterwards, Vinny and Ash confront their dad about what Kheerat has told them, leaving Nish silently fuming. But what will this mean for the family?

Explaining his character's strained relationship with Kheerat, Navin Chowdhry – who plays Nish – said: "Nish says to Ash that, at a young age, Kheerat had to become the head of the family and a father figure for the other children.

"Nish readily admits Kheerat took on that responsibility which, rightfully, he cannot relinquish now his dad is out. Nish reconnects with the younger ones – Ash and Vinny – because he knows he can easily win them over. He does have genuine compassion and love for them, but it’s on his terms.

"With Kheerat, Nish probably sees a lot of himself, and knows he's the biggest challenge. But if Nish can't win Kheerat over, he'll get him out of the way. If anybody stands in Nish's way, they do not stand a chance."

Discussing how Nish feels to be out of prison, Navin added: "Nish feels so pained and wronged by what's happened to him. He believes he's owed by the world and by his family for the time he's done in prison.

"Rightly or wrongly, this is his mentality – 'I've done my time because I protected my family, now I want payback'; Nish is coming out as a man on a mission to reclaim what he believes is rightfully his. He feels a huge, heart-breaking pain that he's missed out on 20 years of his children's lives, but he wants to reconnect with them on his terms.

"Nish believes that the empire the Panesars built while he was in prison belongs to him and with that comes conflict with Kheerat and Suki. He is desperate to rebuild the life that he lost through his own actions, but Nish blames everybody but himself."

EastEnders airs on Mondays-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
