On tackling such an important and sensitive topic, Outhwaite said: "I think soaps have a responsibility to cover everything in society. They’ve always done it well at EastEnders."

"I’ve always been a massive EastEnders fan but when you’ve been in it, it’s difficult to go back and watch it," she said.
"You go from being a fan to knowing the secrets so it’s a bit trickier.
She did, however, add that she misses the show and working with the crew and her former co-stars.
"I still speak to Scott [Maslen], Jake [Wood] and Lucy Benjamin", she added. "We all keep in touch on social media.
"I do miss them. But I really enjoy having my life back at the same time."
Outhwaite left the soap for a second and final time in 2019 when Mel was hit and killed by a vehicle in the aftermath of a crash.
