Phil Mitchell has woken up from his coma in EastEnders, and that might be very bad news for either his son Ben or Keanu Taylor.

The Mitchells have supposedly been keeping vigil by Phil's (Steve McFadden) side ever since his attack, but Ben has actually used the circumstances to his advantage in his plot to get even with his father.

He first ordered the real culprits Martin (James Bye) and Stacey (Lacey Turner) Fowler out of Walford so he could frame his nemesis Keanu (Danny Walters), and then he started making sinister plans of his own.

In Tuesday's episode (August 6), Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) walked in to Phil's hospital room to find Ben preparing to tamper with his father's life support equipment.

A stunned Jay pleaded with Ben to rethink what he was doing, but their disagreement quickly turned physical as Ben punched his best friend in the face.

The tension soon settled down, with Jay shocked to learn the extent of Ben's hatred for his father and how far he was willing to go to get revenge.

"Why can't he just die?!" Ben shouted.

He then revealed to Jay that he was furious over Phil rewriting his will to leave "a bundle" to Keanu.

Ben later made a terrifying offer to his friend, saying: "Just a couple of a seconds and he's out of our lives forever. Look at yourself, mate. You're dressed for death!"

"How can you say that? Can't you remember how we felt after Heather?" Jay reminded him.

"Killing her made me strong. Made me who I am," Ben insisted.

Jay refused, walking away after telling Ben that he was "disgusted", but he later caught up with a deeply concerned Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) and she begged him to bring Ben home before he did anything rash.

Returning to the hospital, Jay once again confronted Ben, telling him that he can't blame Phil for all of the bad things that have happened to him over the years.

"You've got to stop all this hate. It's doing you more damage than him," Jay insisted. "You can't change him, but you can change you."

Jay's words finally got through to Ben, as he broke down and made a heartfelt apology to his unconscious dad for all of the terrible things he'd done.

"I'm sorry," he cried.

However, both Ben and Jay were in for a shock when Phil's nurse arrived to reveal that he'd actually woken up at some point during their visit.

Not knowing how much his dad had heard, Ben panicked and reverted back to old ways by blaming the attack on Keanu once again.

Meanwhile, Keanu was still being interrogated by the police over Phil's attack and he was alarmed to learn that the primary piece of evidence against him was actually his jumper!

Keanu desperately insisted that Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) could back up his version of events, not knowing that Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) had already sabotaged his alibi.

Once released, his mum Karen (Lorraine Stanley) was horrified to discover how deep he'd gotten in with the Mitchells' criminal business. Her only advice was that Keanu should run in order to avoid going to prison.

Before Keanu could go anywhere, he got a call from Louise (Tilly Keeper) with the big news that Phil had woken up. What will this mean for his future?
