EastEnders star Gillian Wright has revealed that it was her idea to bring Sean Slater back for Jean's story.

Rob Kazinsky is reprising his role as Sean after ten years away, with his return scenes due to air later in the spring.

Although further details are under wraps at the moment, we do know that Sean's much-anticipated comeback will coincide with Jean's ongoing cancer plot.

Viewers have recently seen Jean diagnosed with ovarian cancer and she'll prepare to undergo her first session of chemotherapy next week.

However, as Jean's journey progresses, she'll be aiming to tick off a number of things from her wish list – with finding her estranged son Sean right at the top.

Speaking about her reaction to Jean's story, actress Gillian said: "It was very much a discussion with Kate [Oates]. She said I want to pitch this idea to you and see what you think about it.

"Kate asked me various questions such as 'What would be on Jean’s wish list?' and that’s when I said Jean would want to find Sean. So it was a discussion really, it was great."

She added: "I came away about an hour and a half later after a really lovely chat with Kate, and exchanging ideas, and she really liked some of my ideas. I came away feeling hugely chuffed that they thought I was good enough to be able to carry a storyline like this because it’s a massive responsibility.

"There are so many people affected by cancer in some shape or form who watch the show, I know it’s a huge responsibility. Even though everyone’s cancer story is different, it’s still got to be true."

EastEnders continues tonight (March 26) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
