Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Soaps aren't scared of weaving real-life events into the drama at short notice, and Coronation Street is no different today as the ITV series referred to Sue Devaney's transformative new look.

The actor, who plays Debbie Webster, showed off her new look at a press event a few weeks ago, but today's episode of the soap was the first time that the much-loved character could be seen with the new style.

The instalment begins with Debbie, sporting a pink hairstyle, getting a surprise from her husband and friends. After being dubbed "Barbie" by Christina, she finds out that Ronnie has booked a villa in Spain so the girls could go on holiday together.

Debbie later speaks with Toyah, who says that she "loved" her friend's new hairstyle, before Debbie confides in Carl that she was nervous about going on holiday due to her struggles with dementia.

Debbie eventually gets Ronnie to cancel the holiday, and apologises to Christina, Sally and Glenda at Roy's Rolls. While there, they talk about the ongoing storyline involving Sam, with Roy criticising them for gossiping.

At the aforementioned press event, Devaney spoke about her upcoming departure from the soap, with the actor promising that there was a "long way to go" before she says goodbye to Weatherfield.

"There's a lot more fun to be had. You do see her deteriorating and that's really upsetting, but you still see the Debbie that I love to play – the fun Debbie! It's Debbie in all her glory. You see her with her friends and that's lovely.

"She's doing all the things that she's always wanted to do in life… Debbie is just happy to be with the people she loves. She'll enjoy having them around and enjoy life at its fullest, but be honest with them too."

"What really matters is honesty – if you can be honest with yourself and those around you. That's what Debbie is trying to do, so she'll say everything she wants to say, before she can't say it," added the actor, who first played Debbie in 1984.

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
