Coronation Street and Emmerdale have made a rare move after receiving criticism about the upcoming crossover episode from fans. Earlier today, the ITV soaps announced that filming is under way on the special one-off episode, with fans responding to the news with the same complaint.
Back in May, the soaps confirmed that they would be merging for a special "celebration of the genre" in which characters from both soaps would come together in an unprecedented twist on the format.
Sharing an announcement, the soap confirmed that filming has already begun on the one-off episode, all while revealing the exciting title for the upcoming special: Corriedale.
As per the press release, the production teams behind each soap have "embarked on an ambitious stunt that will have everlasting consequences for everyone involved".
On social media, Corrie and Emmerdale shared: "Two worlds. One unmissable night of telly! Filming has begun on Corriedale – the Coronation Street x Emmerdale crossover we’ve all been waiting for!"

Following the announcement, fans took to the social media comments to share their thoughts on the crossover episode, with one writing: "If you only watch one of these soaps, you will have no idea on half the characters and half the storylines. It is going to be awful."
In a rare move, Corrie responded directly to fans, saying: "Keep your eyes peeled closer to the time for some handy guides on what you need to know for the ep! But you don’t have to watch Leslie, we won’t force you."
After another fan asked if they would "understand" the plot given they don't watch Emmerdale, the Corrie account replied: "We’ll do our best to fill you in on what you need to know beforehand, but it’s just one episode so you’ll be able to keep up for sure."

Meanwhile, on Emmerdale's Facebook page, they also responded to a fan who said they were worried they wouldn't know who any of the Corrie stars are, saying: "We will help bring you up to speed closer to the time as well."
When another fan questioned if this could mean a permanent storyline under just one soap, Emmerdale responded: "As much as we would love to work with our besties from across the Pennines all the time, it’s just the one episode, then back to BAU!"
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX. Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
