Paul Foreman has broached the subject of assisted dying with Billy Mayhew in Coronation Street.
In recent months, Paul has begun to show the physical signs of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a life-shortening condition that will see his motor functions steadily decline.
In Monday's (July 24) episode, Paul was attending another appointment at the MND clinic when he ran into support group leader Shelly.

Shelly encouraged Paul to make his remaining time count, suggesting that now is the time to take control of his life and put plans in place.
Paul was spurred on by Shelly's positive attitude, though his takeaway from her words ultimately led to a shocking moment with Billy.
When Paul told Billy he had something big to ask him, the vicar assumed it'd be a marriage proposal. However, Paul stunned Billy by asking him to help with an assisted death when the time comes.
Paul recommended they look at websites from assisted death advocacy groups before a horrified Billy outright refused to have anything to do with it.

After the two had a major falling out, Paul went off to the Rovers to drink alone. Former romantic rival Todd turned up to try to explain why Billy would so forcefully reject his partner's request.
Todd explained that not only does an assisted death fly in the face of the vicar's religious beliefs, but Billy also doesn't want to face up to the idea of actually losing him.
Paul seemingly understood Todd's explanation, so he returned home to call off his assisted death plans. Billy was relieved but also admitted that he was expecting his partner to propose to him.
Paul seized the moment to pop the question, and soon the two were engaged! When they later shared their news, Todd was left with questions over whether this is what Paul actually wants.
There are tough times ahead for the pair, as the cast have recently been filming scenes where Paul's condition begins to deteriorate.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
