Coronation Street star Samuel Robertson has addressed the mysterious death in the Adam Barlow storyline, admitting his character is "conflicted".

Scenes airing next week will see Adam learn that a local gangster has been murdered, and he panics that it could be Damon Hay, who Adam deliberately landed in trouble to get him out of his and Sarah's lives.

He fears his actions may have had consequences he did not intend, and Samuel has opened up about whether things have gone too far.

"He’s conflicted here, I think there’s actually a part of him that’s quite keen for Damon to be dead but obviously he knows if he’s implicated there’s serious jeopardy there, so there’s a conflict," he explained.

"Deep down he wouldn’t be overly upset if Damon was killed, but by the same token he wants to keep his nose clean. In some ways, it’s a no-lose situation but in others it’s a no-win."

Samuel admitted that Adam has the potential to stray over to the dark side, adding: "I think he’s got that in him, especially when he’s been betrayed and he feels he’s had his trust broken. I think he’s capable of wreaking vengeance.

"I don’t think he could kill someone himself but maybe he could find a middle man."

Adam also confesses to Sarah about his fears over Damon, and Samuel was asked whether the pressure of his job as a lawyer and being potentially on the wrong side of the law forces him to open up to his wife.

"I think it’s his guilty conscience, he’s quick to say he only wanted Damon warned off, not killed off," the star replied.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
