Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street killer Stephen Reid is left with another potential opponent to worry about tonight (March 6).

Stephen is trying to concentrate his efforts on taking control at Underworld, but his recent accidental engagement is now causing a major distraction.

Last week, Stephen mistakenly spiked his own drink with LSD and sought support from his friend Elaine Jones when he spiralled out of control while under the influence of the drug.

Elaine, who was unaware of the real reason for Stephen's strange behaviour, misinterpreted a comment that he'd made and wildly jumped to the conclusion that he was popping the question.

In Monday's episode, Elaine excitedly looks to the future with Stephen, failing to realise that he has no genuine romantic interest in her.

Elaine researches a country cottage where she hopes to set up home with Stephen. Her son Tim Metcalfe is concerned when he spots what she's looking at.

Although Elaine keeps quiet about her engagement news, she's delighted to have everyone know that she's now in a relationship with Stephen.

Elaine confirms that she's looking at properties and taking Stephen's advice, as they'll be spending a substantial amount of time there.

Tim worries for his mum, still unsure whether Stephen can be trusted to treat her well.

The Weatherfield cabbie is particularly worried after Elaine's previous ordeal with abusive Geoff Metcalfe.

Aware that Tim is watching him closely, can Stephen work out a way to talk him round?

Todd Boyce – who plays Stephen – recently discussed his character's connection to Elaine, explaining: "He is perfectly capable of being charming – he has got Elaine, Rita, Jenny and Sarah fooled but men can be a bit wary of him. It is such a veneer, he is pretty shameless."

Asked whether Stephen genuinely cares for anyone, Todd replied: "He hasn't shown a lot of care or compassion. David has bugged him and got under his skin – it is a good job David is otherwise distracted, otherwise he may have been a real problem to Stephen.

"He has avoided spending a lot of time with his mum and is just using Elaine, as we know.

"The couple of exceptions are perhaps Sarah, who he does have a lot of time for and is close to, but of course he saw much more of her in the past out in Milan.

"And he is still attracted to Jenny – that is really where it could go wrong for him if he gets distracted by her. He sees the life he could have had with Jenny and that is the life that he wants."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
