Coronation Street's Max Turner was pulled in for a police interview following his recent involvement with Griff and his extremist gang in Sunday's (January 8) episode.

After being groomed by Griff into spreading racist propaganda, Max switched his loyalties when he uncovered Griff's shocking intentions of bombing the street and tipped off his neighbours.

He seemed to have turned over a new leaf, co-operating with the police, apologising to his neighbours, and saying all the right things to the family to make things right.

However later, his girlfriend Lauren Bolton came over and asked if she could talk to Max privately, so Gail and David agreed and they went out, but she had secretly brought Griff with her.

Griff immediately began saying all the things Max wanted to hear, that he was smart and could lead the whole movement, and that he really cared about him and, although Max made it clear he wasn't on board with the bomb, he didn't disagree with anything else.

They were tipped off about Griff being in the house so David and the police arrived and arrested Griff.

Later, when he was having tea with David, Max admitted that he still believed all the racist views and that nothing had changed. A confused David asked him about it.

"The fact that our country's under attack, like the fact that people are trying to take away what it means to be British."

When David questioned him about who these people are Max said he didn't know but they are taking down statues and taking away children's books.

He revealed he believed he was saying "what most people around here are too scared to say" and latched onto Audrey mentioning that things were better in her day, believing that there would be more opportunities for someone like him.

"People like you? What, like white you mean? Is that what you mean? Max, this wrong, it's rubbish, it's utter nonsense that Griff has filled your head with."

Max wasn't happy and told David his views were his own and they were valid, before leaving the table.

Corrie producer Iain MacLeod recently confirmed that the show intends to redeem Max in the coming months.

He said to Digital Spy: "The story will reach its climax in the first couple of months of the year. By the start of 2023, Max has become even more estranged from his family than he has been. This leads him into extremely dangerous territory, it's fair to say.

"Max will, over the course of 2023, realise the error of his ways. A lot of what we're doing after that is about him being deprogrammed and un-brainwashed. There is a redemption on the horizon for him after what he's been through, but the after-effects – like with all stories – last for a very long time after that."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
