Coronation Street's Alya and Maria left in danger in extremism story

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street will continue its extremism storyline as Maria Connor and Alya Nazir are caught up in the police's pursuit of the far-right gang.

In new pictures of upcoming episodes, Samia Longchambon's Maria and Sair Khan's Alya walk in front of a red car. They are watched and intimidated by the gang of thugs, led by Griff.

Things ramp up a gear, however, when armed police officers arrive and take aim at the car. Griff is forced out of the vehicle with his hands on his head. It's unclear if Maria and Alya are just in the wrong place at the wrong time and have been caught up in the situation, or if they are part of some sort of set-up.

Maria and Alya walk past the far right gang, that are terrorising Coronation Street, just before the men are ambushed by armed police. The car is searched but there is no sign of Max, is this a decoy and are the girls in danger?

Maria, who is a councillor, has been supporting local refugees — this has caught the attention of the racist gang. But while the community are trying to stand up to the gang, teenager Max Turner (played by Paddy Bever) has been groomed into joining Griff's group. However, during the search of Griff's car, there is no sign of Max.

The storyline over the coming weeks and months will feature Max becoming more disillusioned with life and his family and more manipulated by Griff. Griff will use Max's computer and editing skills to help fuel and spread their far-right messages.

This isn't the first time the police have been involved in this story, either. Undercover police officer Spider is already trying to bring the gang down. Meanwhile, David has already warned Max to be careful around Griff, but to no avail.

Earlier this week, the soap aired shocking scenes of Daryan Zahawi being attacked by the gang as the group's motives and acts of hate begin to become more and more clear to the residents of Coronation Street.
