ITV has announced three special spin-off shows for Coronation Street and Emmerdale to air over the summer.

Both soaps recently returned to filming amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and over the coming months those new episodes will air alongside some trips down memory lane.

Coronation Street will get two specials – one under the working title Memorable Moments, an eight-part clip series focusing on some of the show's biggest moments.

Narrated by Jason Manford, each episode is specially curated on a different area, namely 'Weddings', 'Villains', 'Stories That Gripped The Nation', 'Battle Axes', 'Scandals', 'Partnerships', 'Famous Faces' and 'High Days and Holidays'.

The second special series is called Icons, which will consist of four episodes narrated by Sally Lindsay, each on a different cobbles legend.

The four that have been chosen are Ken Barlow, Sally Metcalfe, Liz McDonald and Roy Cropper, with respective actors William Roache, Sally Dynevor, Beverley Callard and David Neilson recalling stories alongside archive footage.

Emmerdale's spin-off series, titled Family Trees, will be centred on some of the village's most notable families.

The four-parter will consist of episodes on the Sugdens, the Tates, the older Dingles and the younger Dingles, with Gaynor Faye providing the commentary.

"Not only will new episodes of the soaps continue in the schedules, we now have these new specials to join them and entertain viewers," said Katie Rawcliffe, ITV's Head of Entertainment Commissioning.

"Both soaps have a rich history and we've delved into the archives with these new programmes to celebrate that."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV. Emmerdale currently airs on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm on ITV.
