On tonight's Coronation Street (June 12) Carla Connor had a surprise visitor who left viewers guessing about her identity.

The young woman, named Chelsey, was first seen in the Corner Shop where she conned Cathy out of money saying she desperately needed it for a taxi.

Chelsey then went to the Rovers Return where she used Cathy's money to order a double vodka and tonic and immediately had her eye on Carla.

Later, Chelsey began quizzing Sean Tully about who Carla is, finding out that she was in charge at the Rovers. She then secretly filmed Carla on her phone while in her booth.

The episode ended with Chelsey following Carla into the toilets and demanding to speak with her.

But when Carla suggested they talk in the bar, Chelsey asked her: "Do you really want your pals to find out how I know you?"

The cliffhanger left fans on Twitter guessing about the newcomer's true identity, with some suggesting she could potentially have a connection to Scott.

Other fans went as far back as Carla's ex Tony Gordon, and guessed she may have been his daughter, while some viewers thought she could actually be Carla's daughter or her secret sister.

But while we'll have to wait and see who the mysterious Chelsey really is, Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod previously confirmed that Carla's mental health storyline would be revisited this year.

"We don't know precisely what (Carla) got up to when she was away. We saw glimpses of it with the hotel and the squat, but we don't really know what happened," he said.

"It felt like an interesting opportunity to delve into her recent story and generate something in the present, which will also reveal something we hadn't known previously about somebody else in the show.

"We meet two people we've not seen before, who emerge from Carla's mental health story. In the present, somebody that's currently in the show elsewhere reveals their true colours. That's a bit cryptic, but I don't want to give too much away."

Coronation Street currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
