Coronation Street star Trevor Michael Georges has opened up about the personal connection he has with the Bailey family's racism storyline.
In scenes airing this week, Trevor's character Ed finds himself on the receiving end of racist name-calling and abuse by Bistro manager, Don, and while he tries to rise above it, sons Michael and James encourage him to stand up.
Speaking of the message behind the storyline and what he hopes it will achieve, the actor revealed that one of his children had been subjected to racist abuse recently.

"A few weeks ago I went into my children's school to discuss issues one of my children was having regarding racist remarks made by one of their peers — more than forty years after I suffered the same at school," he said.
"Society doesn't change easily and recessions, wars, politics and terrorism can bring back the same ogres. You can seldom fix anything over night but you can keep trying to heal a recurring sickness and I think that's the process we're part of."

Speaking further about why it is important for Coronation Street to explore the storyline, Trevor added: "People watch and take what they see to heart.
"The subject matter won't go away if we ignore it and many don't have anywhere to go to find a platform for reflection. It's also good for Coronation Street to stay grafted to the real world to maintain its own relevance."
The soap has been working with Baroness Doreen Lawrence, whose son Stephen was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993, on the storyline.
Coronation Street currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
