Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews is calling for the ITV soap to break with tradition and not celebrate its upcoming 60th anniversary milestone with a live episode.
The soap previously marked its 40th and 50th anniversaries with a live episode – not to mention some major deaths, a huge tram crash (50th) and a visit from actual royalty (40th).
But according to Matthews this is a precedent that should be shunned for the next milestone event as she admits she'd like to see Corrie try something a little different this time.
"I don't see the point in doing a live episode," the actress, who plays Jenny Bradley in the soap, told TV Times.
"It's been done. They should do something different. I'd love to have Thelma [Barlow] back – it would be fab to have Mavis and Rita reunited."
While we don't know about any huge Corrie reunions or comebacks just yet, soap boss Iain MacLeod has previously teased that the 60th anniversary celebrations are likely to be "explosive".
What to Read Next
"The expectation from the audience now with anniversaries isn't necessarily death and destruction, but that a spectacle is attached to it," he said. "We have some fairly novel ideas that we are exploring at the moment, so that should be exciting."
Coronation Street's 60th anniversary will take place in December this year, and before we get to that milestone the long-running soap has *another* one to celebrate next week as it airs its 10,000th episode on February 7.
MacLeod has previously promised a "classic" Corrie episode, and recent spoilers have revealed that the episode will bring news of the death of classic character Dennis Tanner and spark a day trip to Blackpool for a group of residents as they go to scatter Dennis' ashes.
"10,000 episodes! Not bad for a programme which one newspaper said in 1960 was 'doomed from the outset'," MacLeod said in a statement.
"I am first and foremost a massive fan of the show and I watched this landmark episode with absolute glee. It is uniquely Corrie: funny, poignant and characterful – and a glorious homage to the comedic charabanc trips of times past, packed with strong female characters and sparkling dialogue.
"It's a really great exhibition of Coronation Street's classic qualities as we start a new decade on the cobbles."
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
