Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon has revealed that Maria Connor's relationship with Gary Windass will come under strain again in next week's emotional storyline.

The ITV soap has announced that Maria is about to face another tragedy, as she suffers a miscarriage after contracting measles from Daniel Osbourne's baby son Bertie.

Gary (Mikey North) will be furious when he finds out that Bertie didn't receive his vaccinations, due to Daniel pulling him out of the medical centre during an important appointment a few weeks ago.

Speaking about the dispute, Samia explained: "Gary goes and finds Daniel and lashes out at him, but in Maria's opinion, Daniel's been through enough and that's the last thing he needs. She just wants to grieve without it being a big drama."

On how it affects Maria and Gary's relationship more generally, she continued: "It does put a strain on the relationship and it makes Maria question the relationship again. She tells Gary he doesn't have to stay with her now.

"If the reason why they're living together, and he's bought her the car, is all down to the fact they were having a baby together, then they're not anymore and he can go if he wants.

"She's been through a lot, she feels anxious and this has brought it all to the surface. She did get pregnant quickly and she's giving Gary that option now by saying if you don't want all this, that's fine.

"But Gary says he does want them to make a go of it and hopefully it will make them stronger."

Viewers will see Maria's ex-boyfriend Ali Neeson (James Burrows) accompany her to the hospital when she starts bleeding, as Gary is away in Bristol at the time.

Asked whether Maria still has feelings for Ali, Samia replied: "I think she does still have feelings for Ali, but she has pushed them deep down and is trying to make a go of her relationship with Gary and try and be true to him."

Samia also addressed Coronation Street's decision to explore the vaccination storyline. As well as the link to Bertie, the show will reveal that Maria's mother didn't have her vaccinated when she was younger.

"It's definitely an issue that needs talking about," Samia said. "It's a problem that measles is on the rise again in this country and it shouldn't be.

"There are vaccinations there to stop it, but people are choosing not to vaccinate their children. Obviously it is a personal decision but it can have a snowball effect so it is really important to show that."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
