Coronation Street's Maria Connor will receive heartbreaking news as she suffers a miscarriage.

ITV has confirmed that in scenes airing next week, Maria (Samia Longchambon) will be taken to hospital by Ali Neeson (James Burrows).

The doctor explains that measles is the likely cause for Maria losing the baby – which leads to anger as Gary Windass (Mikey North) is quick to blame and confront Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard), as Maria looks to have contracted the illness from Bertie.

Daniel didn't let Bertie have all of his vaccinations, and his baby also ends up in hospital with measles.

Elsewhere, an exhausted Daniel kisses Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon), thinking she's Sinead.

Earlier this month, Longchambon suggested that Maria will regret her relationship with Gary.

"I think she just wants to be loved. She wants that family unit that she's never had, really," she explained. "Because she's pregnant and she doesn't want to bring up the baby on her own like last time, that's why she's sort of overlooking [Gary's confession]."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
