Helen Lederer says she would love to go back to Hollyoaks if she was asked to.

The actress played troubled midwife Mariam in the soap, but earlier this year the character fell victim to the Gloved Hand Killer - now revealed to be Lindsey Butterfield (Sophie Austin).

"Worst things have happened - people have gone back as ghosts in Hollyoaks, so never say never," she told Digital Spy. "Oh yes, [I would love to go back]. I loved being around the people on set.

"It's nice to embrace new things, and I was delighted when they wanted me to [be part of the Gloved Hand storyline]. You get a lot of different directors on Hollyoaks and a lot of different script editors, so it's quite a serious storyline and everyone needed it to be resolved.

"I think it has gone on for as long as it possibly could."

Lederer, who said that she didn't expect Lindsey to be the Gloved Hand Killer, added that she is surprised by how popular Hollyoaks is.

"It's a great programme to be on," she explained. "When I'm touring now and I stop off at a service station, loads of younger people go, 'Oh my god, you're the lady who did the baby swap'. I can't believe so many people watch it."

So why does she think Hollyoaks is as popular as it is?

"They have amazing high drama stuff, and they get away with it. It's real high drama," she said. "You've got incest, you've got murder, you've got gay issues, you've got bullying, you name it. It happens in Hollyoaks.

"I think they go for it. And because you get different forms - like with music and flashbacks - they're not afraid to use different ways of presenting it. It gives them licence to go as crazy as they like, and it's fun.

"For instance, the fact that somebody has to play the part of an apparition - how the hell do you play a ghost? You're not even real. But somehow they manage to pull it off, because they approach it in an imaginative way.

"I'm a great fan of Hollyoaks, I have to say."

Helen Lederer's book Losing It is out now.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
