Shrek, aka everyone's favourite green ogre, is returning to our screens with a fifth adventure as a new teaser has thrown some shade at Disney's Frozen and reintroduced an iconic character.

While the only bad news at this stage seems to be that we'll have to wait a whole year for Shrek 5 given the sequel is hitting cinemas in the summer of 2027, there's plenty to celebrate as the teaser reunited the main gang and yes, that includes Gingy, the Gingerbread Man.

Power couple Shrek and Fiona and their trusted, overexcited sidekick Donkey are in some serious trouble this time around as the clip reveals the trio lands themselves in jail during their journey to Further, Further Away.

Stars Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy reprise their respective voice roles from previous instalments in the franchise, with Shrek newcomers Zendaya, SNL star Marcello Hernandez and Skylar Gisondo join the cast as Shrek and Fiona's children, Felicia, Fergus and Farkle.

Meanwhile, the teaser doesn't shy away from addressing the long-standing rivalry between Shrek's production company, DreamWorks, and Disney with a little dig aimed at Frozen. On their way to Further, Further Away, a creepy parody of snowman Olaf propositions Donkey from a dark alleyway, asking him: "You wanna date a snowman?"

But a Shrek movie wouldn't be complete without Gingy, who can be seen twerking with two pink gummy buttons attached to his bottom as he proclaims: "I'm caked up like a freaking bakery!"

The trailer ends with Shrek, Fiona, their kids and Donkey stuck in a prison cell as Murphy's character croons 'Baby Come Back' and 'Roxanne', though it's fair to say Shrek isn't exactly enjoying the musical entertainment.

Reaction to the trailer has been mixed from fans, one saying of the new look: "Bring back the old animation," another asking: "What happened to my beautiful baby Shrek?" However, a third enthused: "I AM SAT FOR THIS."

The fifth instalment in the main franchise, and the first Shrek film to be released in 17 years following 2010's Shrek Forever After, the hotly-anticipated fifth chapter has seen its release date pushed back multiple times. Originally slated for a July 2026 release, the film was moved to December 2026 and now to June next year.

Shrek 5 is released in cinemas on 30 June, 2027.
