The Bourne Identity film series very nearly ended 15 years ago.
Director Doug Liman has now revealed that he and Matt Damon considered killing off Jason Bourne at the end of the first film.
Talking to Uproxx, Liman explained: "Matt Damon and I talked about killing Jason Bourne at the end of The Bourne Identity. We were like, 'No-one will see that coming!' And obviously, we decided not to do that."
He explained, however, that the decision was less to do with sequels than to provide a "satisfying ending".
"But it wasn't even about the sequel. It was just, would it be satisfying to the audience? So we really were faced with one hell of a challenge."
So, there you have it – The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy and Jason Bourne almost didn't happen.
What to Read Next
The franchise is likely to stop there though, as Matt Damon doesn't reckon there will be another outing for his super assassin.
Speaking earlier this year, Damon said that the box office takings of last year's Jason Bourne mean there likely won't be another one.
"It would have to be a pretty incredible story to get us all back on the horse," Damon explained. "This last one didn't do as well as the one we did 10 years ago, so maybe people are done with the character.
"Look, we all love working together and those movies are a lot of fun to make, so we sure would be happy to do it. If we can figure out a good story."
