With the CIA-level secrecy that has surrounded the fifth instalment of the Bourne franchise, any snippet of information is a treat.

Matt Damon has teased what's in store for Jason Bourne and it sounds like he's not doing so well.

"There's been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties," Damon told EW.

"We find him in a dark and tortured place."

He gave a shooting update just before Christmas and confirmed they're about half way through filming and revealed some location spoilers.

"We were in Tenerife, which is supposed to be Athens. It would be like a nighttime riot scene to kind of start the movie. And then England, Berlin a little bit for about a week, and a little bit in DC.
