You thought you'd never see the day when a rugby league team would wear a strip that looks like a Star Trek: The Next Generation uniform. Well, today is that day.

Mirfield Stags are the delightfully nerdy bunch who've boldly gone where no rugby team has gone before, all in honour of Jean-Luc Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart.

You might not realise this, but Stewart comes from the West Yorkshire town, and this is how they pay their respects in Mirfield: through sci-fi rugby strips.

Stags managing director Ryan Sparks said: "Sir Patrick Stewart is quite possibly the biggest name to have ever come out of Mirfield and we are proud to pay tribute to him in this manner."

We can't wait for the X-Men / Professor X suit-and-tie get-up, whenever that comes around.
