St Trinian’s, the British remake starring Jodie Whittaker and Celia Imrie, has climbed up the trending chart on Netflix. Released in 2007 and based on Ronald Searle's post-war satirical comic strips, the film follows a group of rebellious students who attempt to save their school from bankruptcy.

The logline reads: "When an educational minister threatens to close St Trinian's school, the student body plans a lucrative heist worthy of a million detentions."

St Trinian’s is currently the fifth most-watched film on Netflix UK since being added to the streamer on Friday. The sequel is also available on Netflix, though it is not currently trending.

Between the 1950s and 1980s, five St Trinian's films were released. Popular with audiences, the films followed the girls at an anarchic boarding school run by their eccentric headmistress, Miss Millicent Fritton.

The 2007 remake boasts an impressive cast, including Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Lena Headey, Anna Chancellor, Stephen Fry, Mischa Barton, and Toby Jones.

Rounding out the cast are Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley, Juno Temple, Lily Cole, Paloma Faith and Tamsin Egerton.

The film proved unpopular with critics and currently holds a 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 41 reviews, though the poor reviews clearly haven’t stopped Netflix viewers from giving it a chance.

"Colin Firth's humiliation is a thing of wonder. His entire career on screen and stage is beautifully sent up before our eyes," wrote The Times.

Village Voice said of the film: "With the right attitude this cheerfully calculated effort to update the old girl for a tween market can be enjoyed in all its endearing awfulness, as a loony High School Musical with posher accents and a lot more going on upstairs."

"Lacking any really sharp dialogue, the film just about goes the distance by juggling its characters in short, sketch-like scenes and inserting occasional musical montages," penned Variety.

The New York Daily News said: "Anyone with a fondness for the midcentury cartoons and films that inspired this scrappy comedy will appreciate the latest trip to the titular British boarding school."
