Chaos Walking, the "underrated" sci-fi thriller starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, is on TV tonight. Despite being a box office bomb, the film was generally liked by viewers upon its release in 2021.

The film is based on Patrick Ness's 2008 novel The Knife of Never Letting Go, and is set in a dystopian world only inhabited by men. This all changes, however, when Viola (Ridley) crash-lands on the planet, and is protected by Todd (Holland).

Directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay by Ness and Christopher Ford, the sci-fi thriller will air tonight on BBC One at 11.25pm. If you simply can't wait, then you're in luck, as the film is already streaming on BBC iPlayer!

In addition to Holland and Ridley, the stacked cast for the film includes Mads Mikkelsen, Cynthia Erivo, David Oyelowo, Nick Jonas, Demián Bichir, Ray McKinnon, Bethany Anne Lind and Camren Bicondova.

Upon its theatrical release, the sci-fi film performed poorly at the box office, grossing only $27 million against a reported budget of $100-125 million. Furthermore, it received negative reviews from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting an approval rating of 21%.

It was, however, warmly received by viewers, with the audience score on the same site being a respectable 71%. On IMDb, meanwhile, Chaos Walking has a user rating of 5.7/10 from 64,000 logs.

"I'm flabbergasted by the extremely negative reviews for Chaos Walking. That you don't find it a masterpiece I can get but that you were not even remotely entertained by this movie remains a mystery to me," wrote one user on IMDb, while another called it "underrated".

"There are some things that could of been done better/explored more in this movie, but for the most part, it is a good movie! The cinematography, setting, acting was great!" wrote a third viewer, who called it a "breath of fresh air".

A fourth fan echoed this sentiment as they called it "very interesting", adding: "It had a very different and new plot, something that I had not watched before. The interpretations of both Tom Holland who played Todd and Daisy Ridley who played Viola were very good."

If sci-fi thrillers aren't necessarily your thing but you are looking for something to watch on BBC iPlayer, other films that have recently been added to the streamer include iconic '90s romcom Four Weddings and a Funeral and acclaimed period drama The King's Speech.

Chaos Walking airs at 11.25pm on BBC One and is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
