A month after winning the Oscar for his dual performance as twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler's acclaimed horror Sinners, Michael B Jordan has landed the lead role in the remake of a 1980s cop series.

After being in talks for the role, the Black Panther actor has finally been confirmed to star in Miami Vice '85, a period remake of TV series Miami Vice (via The Hollywood Reporter). Jordan is set to feature opposite Austin Butler, with the duo taking on the roles of undercover cops Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs and James 'Sonny' Crockett respectively, originally played by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson.

Set for a 2027 release, Miami Vice '85 is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who will shoot on IMAX as he did for his previous blockbusters F1: The Movie and Top Gun: Maverick.

The remake marks Jordan's first lead role since his Academy Award win. He will also be seen in a reimagining of 1968 caper The Thomas Crown Affair, which filmed before the Oscars.

Directed by Jordan, the romantic heist movie follows a billionaire who steals a valuable painting and is subsequently roped in a cat-and-mouse game with an insurance investigator as the two inevitably fall in love.

Jordan's will be the second remake of the original film directed by Norman Jewison and starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in the lead roles. A first remake from Die Hard director John McTiernan was released in 1999, featuring Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo and original star Dunaway in the role of Crown's psychiatrist.

Miami Vice '85 is released in cinemas on 6 August 2027.
