Michaela Coel is officially working on an unexpected remake of the '80s cult classic Bloodsport. The Chewing Gum star is writing and directing the project in collaboration with A24.
The original movie, which was released in 1988, told the story of Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a US army captain who was trained in ninjutsu from a very young age.
When Dux is invited to compete in the Kumite, an illegal martials arts tournament, he takes unauthorised leave from the Army and heads to Hong Kong, with two US officials hot on his trail.

Bloodsport was based on claims by the real Frank Dux, who served as the action choreographer and technical advisor on the movie. Dux first recounted his story in Black Belt magazine - though the accuracy of his claims was later disputed.
As for Coel's remake, plot details are still being kept under wraps so it's unclear how the story will be adapted for new audiences.
What to Read Next
"I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them," Coel said (via Variety).
"I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET'S F**KING GO."
Producer Marc Toberoff added: "In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts. I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again."

Directed by Newt Arnold, Bloodsport currently holds an underwhelming 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 31 mixed reviews.
"Hacking through the jungle of cliche and reservoir of bad acting in Bloodsport are some pretty exciting matches," wrote Los Angeles Times, with Medium Popcorn calling it: "Very entertaining despite making absolutely no sense."
Meanwhile, over on IMDB, one review described the movie as a "uniquely memorable tour de force of the martial arts genre".
Another added: "This film impressed me because of its charm and simplicity and because it reflects the spirit of another time. The film has truly fulfilled its primary task, it is entertaining and easy to watch."
