Sydney Sweeney's psychological thriller The Housemaid proved to be a hit with critics and fans alike. The Housemaid is based on the 2022 novel of the same name by Freida McFadden, and is directed by A Simple Favour and Bridesmaids' Paul Feig.

Much credit for the movie's success was down to its stars. "The darker it becomes, the more implausible it is, but it’s held together by impressive performances by Amanda Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney and Brandon Sklenar," said The Australian.

Reactions were slightly more exuberant on social media, where one critic posted: "The Housemaid is WILD... It is playful, stylish, and an absolute blast before the film takes a sharp, gripping turn that keeps you on the edge of your seat."

If you missed the chance to see it in cinemas, you'll be pleased to know the movie will be available on premium video on demand services very soon.

The Housemaid will be available for premium video-on-demand (PVOD) streaming on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google TV, YouTube and more from 3 February 2026.

What to Read Next

The Housemaid follows ex-convict Millie (Sweeney), who takes a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Winchester family, including husband and wife Andrew (It Ends With Us’ Sklenar) and Nina (Seyfried).

It appears to be the dream job for Millie, but it soon turns into a twisted, dangerous game of sex, scandal and power when she uncovers dark family secrets.

The Housemaid seems to have ended Sweeney's recent streak of box office and critical disappointments, which included awards-bait boxing biopic Christy, which The Guardian called "a stodgy, lifeless piece of work".

Of The Housemaid, The Guardian gave it four out of five stars, writing: "We get some tastily over-the-top acting and some huge rewind POV shifts to explain what has really been going on... Silly it may be, but Feig and his cast deliver it with terrific gusto; this is an innocent holiday treat."

For its box office success, the movie made it past the $300 million mark at the global box office, surpassing Feig’s Bridesmaids to become his highest-grossing movie.

The Housemaid is out on premium video on demand services from 3 February, 2026.
