28 Years Later: The Bone Temple spoilers follow.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple director Nia DaCosta has opened up about that huge twist in the newly-released sequel. The movie continues the post-apocalyptic franchise, though one of the most notable moments comes thanks to Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry).

Throughout the movie, we see the infected Alpha leader and Dr Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) try to find a potential cure for the Rage Virus via anti-psychotic drugs.

As he's attacked by a group of infected later on, it seems that Samson's now immune to the virus – though he subsquently finds that Kelson has been fatally stabbed by Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell). While it appears that the potential discovery could die with the doctor, Samson could hypothetically remember enough to replicate the discovery.

DaCosta has now addressed the turn of events and whether it is temporary due to the drugs or something more permanent, suggesting it isn't as simple as it seems while also noting that there is a third movie to come.

"I was talking to [writer] Alex [Garland] about it last night, and I don’t want to say anything that might need to be retconned because I have strong opinions about how I approached it for this movie," she told The Hollywood Reporter.

"But I think I’m good to say that he’s not fully cured, and the level that he is healed is permanent," the director then teased. "He’s not what he was [at the start of the movie], but is he one of us? I don’t know. But he’s not what he was."

When further pressed on whether it is "something in between", DaCosta replied with an affirmative.
