If you want to get out of the Christmas spirit and spend your Saturday evening watching an action thriller starring Gary Oldman and Gerard Butler from 2018, then Film4 has you covered. The channel will be showing the film Hunter Killer at 6.4opm this evening.

Based on Don Keith and George Wallace's 2012 novel Firing Point, the film follows a group of Navy SEALS who need to enter enemy waters undetected and rescue the kidnapped Russian President in order to avoid a global political catastrophe.

Alongside our leading duo, the film also stars rapper and actor Common, Michael Nyqvist, Linda Cardellini, Michael Trucco and Toby Stephens.

After its airing on Film4 tonight (which is starting quite early for a film with an 15 age rating), the film should be available on the Channel 4 streaming service for about 30 days.

At the time of writing, the film isn't included with any other streaming subscription.

What to Read Next

Hunter Killer was a bomb at the box office, making $31.7 million off the back of a reported $40 million budget.

It's also one of those films where fans liked it more than critics, with a 32% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes from critic reviews and 67% positive from fan ratings, while the IMDb user score is an average of 6.7.

The consensus among the professional reviewers is that Hunter Killer is generic and clichéd, although Associated Press noted that that film is "so often so unintentionally silly that it's actually kind of a fun watch".

Over on IMDb, fans called it "a nice throwback to the classic 80s' well done action flicks that we all loved growing up" with CGI that was "jaw-dropping in the underwater scenes".

"Full of action, excitement, plot twists and yes a bit gung ho, but so what," wrote another fan.

Hunter Killer airs on Film4 at 6.40pm tonight, and should be available on the Channel 4 streaming service afterwards.
