Mantis, a spin-off set in the same universe as Kill Boksoon, will land on Netflix on 26 September.

The Korean film, which is directed by Lee Tae-sung, boasts a stellar cast, with Yim Si-wan, who recently starred in seasons two and three of Squid Game, leading the cast as ace assassin Han-ul – aka Mantis.

Rounding out the cast, Park Gyu-young, who also appeared in Squid Game, plays Mantis's old friend and fellow killer, Jae-yi, while Jo Woo-jin stars as his former mentor, Dok-go.

According to Netflix, Mantis will follow Han-ul as he returns to a "collapsed-order hired killer industry after his vacation".

"Upon reentering this anarchic world, Mantis encounters Jae-yi, his fellow trainee and rival, and Dok-go, a retired legendary killer, and realises they are all vying for the top spot among the killers."

Mantis, which entered production last year, was greenlit after the success of Kill Boksoon, the hit action thriller from writer and director Byun Sung-hyun.

Led by Jeon Do-yeon, the actor portrays Gil Boksoon, a single mother and contract killer, as she attempts to balance her duties as a parent with her high-stakes job at M. K. Ent.

Currently, Kill Boksoon boasts a Certified Fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics commending the film on its action sequences and emotional depth.

"Fans of over-the-top John Wick-style action movies and devotees of arthouse cinema should each find something to like in Kill Boksoon," raved the Los Angeles Times.

"Writer-director Byun Sung-hyun, an up-and-coming director, handles the action sequences with real flair, but does an even better job limning the complex, sometimes fraught relationships," added The Guardian.

"Kill Boksoon remains impressive, if only for its unexpected sensitivity and considerable emotional range," noted RogerEbert.com. Meanwhile, Salon.com called it the "most thrilling portrayal of work-life balance put to the screen".

Mantis will land on Netflix on 26 September.
