Where the Crawdads Sing, the "engrossing" mystery thriller starring Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones, is leaving a UK streamer very soon.

Directed by Olivia Newman, the murder mystery thriller follows Jones as Kya, an abandoned girl who brings herself up in a North Carolina Marshland.

When the body of a young man is discovered, Kya becomes the town's prime suspect and the outcast is tried for murder.

Written by Lucy Alibar and based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens, the film will be available to stream on Channel 4's streaming service until 10.25pm on Friday 29 August.

Rounding out the cast alongside Jones are A Murder at the End of the World's Harris Dickinson, Sharp Objects' Taylor John Smith, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Michael Hyatt, and The Sopranos actor David Strathairn.

Not a huge hit among critics, Where the Crawdads Sing has a score of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes from 221 reviews, though audiences clearly disagree, scoring the movie 96%.

FilmWeek gave the film a positive review, writing: "A fairly engrossing entertainment – a little bit slick and doesn't go in depth into the marsh."

Variety gave the film an equally favourable review, saying: "This is a movie about fighting back against male intransigence that has the courage of its outsider spirit."

"A solid murder mystery with rich characters and a vivid Southern backdrop," penned Newsday, while IndieWire said: "Newman’s adaptation finds just enough ways to endure."

Less favourable in their review, Vanity Fair wrote: "This is the most basic kind of novel adaptation: rote and dutiful, reliant on memories of the book rather than creating a texture of its own. It is implied that characters are interesting – it’s insisted, really – but we never quite see it."

"What emerges on the screen lacks the pace, suspense and humor it needs to keep a general audience alert and riveted," penned The Observer, while Empire Magazine called it "a flat, flair-free and uninspiring adaptation".

Where the Crawdads Sing is available to stream on Channel 4 until Friday 29 August.
