Gerard Butler's action thriller Plane is now streaming for free in the UK.

The 2023 film features Butler as pilot Brodie Torrance, who has to make an emergency landing after his plane is struck by lightning.

Unfortunately, he lands his passengers somewhere even more dangerous: on a war-torn island.

Local rebels kidnap most of the people on board, and Torrance must turn to Louis Gaspare (played by Luke Cage's Mike Colter), a prisoner the FBI were escorting, to try and save them.

After airing on Film4 this week, Plane is now available to stream for free on Channel 4's streaming service (there is also a premium tier at £3.99 a month/£39.99 a year that removes ads from most content).

Critics were on the whole quite enamoured with the film's B-Movie charms, with 79% of 173 reviews collected on Rotten Tomatoes being positive.

Observer called it "a first-rate action thriller", while Detroit News said that sections "recall Die Hard 2 in the best way possible".

"A retro guilty pleasure, one that's as predictable and as lovably dumb as the films it cribs from," said the San Jose Mercury News, while RogerEbert.com knocked it for not being "wilder", stating "it does not revel appropriately enough in its open dumbness".

"This is just the kind of tosh you want it to be," wrote Time Out. "Brisk, easy, brutish. It has explosions, punch-ups, shoot-outs and more than one bit where someone gets smacked in the face with a big hammer. How much more could you reasonably ask? It's a blast."

Fans liked it even more, as it has an average user score of 94% from over 1,000 ratings.

A sequel was announced in 2023, excellently titled Ship, but it hasn't seemed to have set sail since then.

Plane is available to stream now on Channel 4.
