Marvel fans have been discussing the biggest mistakes in the MCU – and one moment seems to come out as the winner.

Many fans agreed that one of the Universe’s worst moments came in the Disney+ miniseries Secret Invasion, which is based on the 2008 Marvel comics storyline of the same name.

The six-episode series, which premiered in 2023, stars Samuel L. Jackson in the role of Nick Fury, who heads off on a new mission without his trusty Avengers pals in a battle to save the earth from the infiltrating Skrulls.

Along the way, he crosses paths with G'iah (Emilia Clarke), MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) as he faces up to Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), leader of the Skrull Resistance.

However, not all of the characters are involved in the storyline for long. Commander and Deputy Director of SHIELD Maria Hill was – spoiler alert – killed off in the first episode, much to viewers’ disappointment.

“I hate that they killed Maria Hill,” wrote one commenter on Reddit, while another expanded: “It was such an opportunity to give that character a lot of screen time and delve into who she is. And they killed her for shock and motivation. The character and the actor both deserved better.”

Another agreed, adding: “I hate that they killed her and never let her really be Maria Hill. She was loyal like the whole time, I wanted to see her hate superheroes and be a really big jerk and assume command of SHIELD the minute Nick Fury goes missing and immediately use her power wrong lol”.

Another viewer chimed in with: “Secret Invasion should have completed Fury’s arc and made Hill the new director, the story had so much potential…”

The killing of Maria Hill has previously been noted as one of the disappointing moments of the series, with Digital Spy writing at the time of the show’s release: “Maria Hill has always been painfully under-utilised in the MCU.

“All of the qualities are there for a compelling, wildly capable, strong female spy, and yet, despite being Fury's supposed right-hand, she has too often been sidelined in favour of others.

Secret Invasion presented an opportunity to dig deeper into her potential – it's an espionage story, after all, so the scene couldn't have been better set.”

Secret Invasion is streaming now on Disney+.
