Mufasa: The Lion King has confirmed its Disney+ streaming release date.

The film, which acts as a prequel to the franchise and follows the younger Mufasa, came out in cinemas last year.

Following a digital release last month, it has now been announced that the movie will hit Disney+ on March 26.

Fans in the UK will be able to watch from 7am GMT that day, hitting the US at the same time at 3am ET and midnight PT.

Mufasa comes from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, and features the voices of Rebel Ridge’s Aaron Pierre as the titular character, with archival recordings of late Mufasa voice artist James Earl Jones also used, and Elvis’ Kelvin Harrison Jr as Taka.

The movie landed a mixed reception from critics, earning a 57% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes – though this marked a better score than the 2019 remake.

Meanwhile, Jenkins spoke last year about the decision to open Mufasa with Jones’s voice following the actor’s death last year.

“You would be thinking about the ways in which you wanted to honour him, so it felt like we had to do it at the very front,” he told Variety. “The studio agreed right away, and we tried to find something that was very simple, but also very clear and very powerful.”

Mufasa: The Lion King will be available to stream on Disney+ on March 26, and is also available to buy or rent from Prime Video, Apple TV, Microsoft Store and more in the UK.
