Jack Quaid is happy he can now say how he really feels about his Companion character, calling him even more "insecure" than Scream's Richie.

The critically-acclaimed new horror sci-fi sees Quaid play Josh who, along with his "companion" robot Iris (Sophie Thatcher), goes on a weekend trip with friends which goes horribly wrong.

When asked by Digital Spy if he felt like Josh would get along with Richie, Quaid couldn't be more in agreement: "Just two insecure man babies, just sharing a pint."

As for exactly what makes Josh such a person, you'll have to watch Companion to find out. However, Quaid noted that there is a big difference between Josh and Richie.

"Richie, all I'm doing in that movie is I'm trying to make sure the audience doesn't get wise to me. I'm trying to make sure that they don't know that I'm secretly the bad guy and Richie very much wants to be a Scream killer, so he loves chewing the scenery," he explained.

"Josh, you know more or less from the beginning of the movie that he's the antagonist and what I loved about the writing for him and a big reason why I wanted to do the movie was he was not a scenery-chewing villain.

"He is an antagonist that does not know that he's the antagonist. He's just a guy with a problem. I think a lesser version of this movie would have had Josh as the protagonist and Iris is going crazy and Josh has to save the day, but I just love that the villain is the human.

"He's definitely one of the most insecure people I've ever played in my life. While I'm shooting, you have to have empathy for the character, even though he makes some pretty despicable choices, and I'm so happy now to just say, 'Screw Josh'."

Ahead of Companion's release, Quaid's co-star Sophie Thatcher also spoke to Digital Spy about how the movie gave her something new to play with.

"There's a lot of lightness in her in the beginning and I feel like I'm drawn to darker projects. This movie becomes darker but it was fun to play with that lightness in the beginning," she reflected.

Companion is released in cinemas on January 31.
