Paddington and Mary Poppins Returns star Ben Whishaw has revealed how therapy helped him come to terms with his sexuality.

The actor, who has been in a civil partnership with composer Mark Bradshaw since 2012, explained that while he is open and comfortable about his sexuality now, there was a period of time when he 'hated' himself.

Speaking to the Sunday Times Magazine, he said: ''There was a moment in my early twenties when I did not feel very good about myself. It was to do with my sexuality and not knowing how to be myself and hating myself. I did know [my sexuality], I just couldn't tell anyone.''

While Whishaw didn't divulge any details about the therapy he received, he did admit it 'really helped' him.

He added: "I don't think [sexuality] is the be-all and end-all, and since revealing my sexuality I haven't had any negative effects."

Whishaw also expressed the view that most people are on a scale when it comes to sexuality.

However, the Spectre star is not so keen on the different terms people use to label themselves, stating: "I hate all these labels. I get mixed up.''

Whishaw will be reprising the voice of Paddington in a new CG-animated series for Nickelodeon, which will follow a younger version of the Peruvian bear on his adventures as he writes to Aunt Lucy from Windsor Gardens.

Meanwhile, we're still waiting on a release date for Paddington 3.
