Longmire has been picked up by Netflix, following its cancellation by A&E.

The crime drama series was axed by A&E in August, leading studio Warner Horizon Television to launch a search for a new partner.

Netflix has now ordered 10 new episodes to pick up moments after the events of season three's finale, which concluded with Absaroka County sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) confronting his wife's murderer.

Robert Taylor, Katee Sackhoff and Lou Diamond Phillips are all signed for the fourth season, although Deadline reports that one major character will likely exit.

Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland announced the new season: "When Warner Horizon Television came to us with the idea for a new season of Longmire, we were intrigued because the series is so unique, and consistently great.

"We are thrilled to help continue Walt Longmire's story for his large and passionate following."

Netflix previously served as a lifeline for former AMC crime drama The Killing following its cancellation, and revived critically-acclaimed sitcom Arrested Development.

Longmire - which is based on Craig Johnson's series of books – originally premiered in 2012. New episodes will air exclusively on Netflix in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
