Roseanne Barr has accused her co-stars of 'throwing her under the bus' after they condemned a racist tweet she made which resulted in the ABC sitcom getting cancelled.

On Tuesday (May 29), Roseanne was widely condemned for her Twitter post which compared former Obama administration official Valerie Jarrett to an ape.

Co-stars including Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman, and Emma Kenney strongly criticised the racist 'joke'. Kenney (who played Harris Conner-Healy) added that she was in the process of quitting the show before she found out that it was axed by the network.

Meanwhile, Fishman said to his Twitter followers that his character DJ Conner "was designed to represent the inclusive nature of my views", and encouraged everyone to "stand up against bias, hatred, bigotry, and ignorance". His statement generated a reaction from Roseanne.

"I created the platform for that inclusivity and you know it. ME," she wrote. "You throw me under the bus. Nice!"

She also appeared to have a go at Gilbert, who tweeted that she was "disappointed in [Roseanne's] actions to say the least".

Confirming Roseanne's cancellation, ABC president Channing Dungey said yesterday: "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show."

Disney CEO Bob Iger, who oversees ABC, concurred in his own statement: "There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing."

Roseanne also claimed that she was on sedatives at the time of the offending tweet, although pharmaceutical company Sanofi, which makes Ambien, responded: "While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication."
