Sharon Horgan has shared getting emotional while working on The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox after finding a personal connection to the real-life story.

The Bad Sisters star plays Amanda's mother Edda Mellas in the Hulu series on Knox's wrongful conviction for the murder of Meredith Kercher.

The series from creator KJ Steinberg stars Grace Van Patten as Knox and counts Knox and Monica Lewinsky among its executive producers.

Speaking on taking on the role of Edda, Horgan said she found it "hard" as she has daughters who are about the same age as Knox during the events that happened in Perugia.

"Yeah, I was in bits all the time. I definitely wasn't in control," Horgan told Deadline. "I was finding it very hard to not put myself in that position."

At first Horgan wasn't sure she'd be right for the role, but explained that a chat with Knox helped her find a connection to Edda.

"Amanda was on that Zoom [call] and it was her that really made me want to say yes, actually, because of the way she talked about her mum," the star said.

"I mean, she described her time in prison and what she went through. But she said, 'Even with all that, I felt my mum had it worse.'

"I've got a 17-year-old and a 21-year-old, and I was so moved by what she was saying. So, that connection made me think, 'I think I can do this.'"

Horgan said she felt "a certain kind of pressure" to get the story right, particularly as Edda visited the set alongside her daughter.

"There was a certain kind of pressure in that you've got their story, and you feel very responsible, and that never left me throughout, but everyone involved really truthfully was so careful," Horgan said.

"You always felt like you were in safe hands and the story was in safe hands."

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox streams on Hulu and Disney +.
