The Leftovers season 1 review: Exhausting, suffocating, brilliant

The story takes place three years after a global event in which many people disappeared, known as the "Sudden Departure", which caused the unexplainable disappearance of 140 million people, 2% of the world's population.

In a series overhaul, several of the cast won't be returning to the show.

However, Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Margaret Qualley and Chris Zylka - who play the Garvey family - are said to be locked in to star in season two.

Christopher Eccleston and Carrie Coon, who play Matt Jamison and Nora Durst respectively, are also reportedly returning.

The Leftovers is based on Tom Perotta's 2011 novel of the same name.
