HBO's long goodbye to The Leftovers will finally come to an end next spring.
The Critics' Choice TV Award-nominated supernatural drama will premiere its third and final season on HBO in the US in April 2017.
That announcement was made in a humorous vlog from The Leftovers co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, who betrayed their vow of silence to the Guilty Remnant in order to spill the beans.
Series regulars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston and Carrie Coon will all return for this farewell season, as the series once again shifts its base to Australia.
Damon Lindelof hasn't yet revealed if season three will finally solve the ongoing mystery of the Sudden Departure of 40 million people worldwide - but he is working on a hard-hitting final scene.
"We eventually said, what do we want the last scene of the series to be, who's in that scene, and what's happening in that scene? What do we want the scene to evoke emotionally?" the writer hinted.
What to Read Next
"On a storytelling level, what happens, what feels like finality in a show that has never been about resolving mystery and delivering conclusive endings. How do we want the audience to be feeling when it's all over?
"Season three, the show is ending, and that's infusing it with a certain degree of energy that's different, perhaps, than the previous seasons."
Among the newcomers lined up for The Leftovers' swansong will be Tony Award-winning stage legend and Doctor Who star Lindsay Duncan in a major role.
