By and large, this year's Emmy nominations got a lot right. But there was one almost completely shut-out show that many people felt deserved a lot more recognition.

Where was all the love for The Leftovers?

Beloved by critics, beloved by fans, and yet the stunning HBO drama only picked up one nomination – Ann Dowd for Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Although Dowd's nomination was richly deserved, the series certainly deserved more love, particularly for Carrie Coon.

Coon earned an Emmy nomination but it was for Fargo. And although she's incredibly grateful for the nod, she did admit that she hoped for more for The Leftovers.

"We've never been recognised by the Emmys – we didn't necessarily count on it this year. We were just a little more hopeful because of all the wonderful, thoughtful pieces that have been written about the show. It really resists any trite conversation.

"We're very proud of it, and I think history will be very kind to the show. I think it's one of the great shows that will continue to resonate."

Many of the stars and co-creator Damon Lindelof have congratulated Dowd on her nomination, as well as thanking fans of the show for their support. Dowd was also nominated for The Handmaid's Tale in the Supporting Drama Actress category.

The Leftovers is airing on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
